Introduction

rs2dv is a server released by Varek on 24 December, 2007. It was built upon the 317 protocol and it was the first publicly released RS2 server that had reasonable stability under denial of service attacks. Feature-wise, it was pretty bare since Varek didn't know much about how RuneScape 2 worked.

rs2dbase was a community project that extended the feature set of rs2dv with numerous skills and a basic combat system.

Criticism

Several people have since discovered that there are some flaws in rs2dv relating to the fact that the ISAAC cipher implementation is not thread safe. MINA dispatches events to multiple worker threads and this can sometimes cause the set of random numbers to be corrupt, leading to errors and disconnections on the client due to invalid packets.

Features

rs2dv only had a basic feature set, but most people found it to be more stable than a typical Winterlove-based server.

The features in the release included:

  • Multiplayer
  • Chat
  • Map region loading
  • Movement
